Los Angeles California - A man is in handcuffs, but not before leading a dramatic police chase that ended in a shootout near Boyle Heights.

Over the course of the chase, the suspect drove through parts of South Los Angeles before crashing the pickup truck near Boyle Heights.

The suspect ditched the Toyota pickup truck and tried to run away from the cops while waving a gun. While on the run, the suspect allegedly shot an officer in the chest before a shot was fired back.

The police officer was wearing a ballistic vest when he got shot in the chest, saving his life.

Officials did not say if the suspect was wanted for other crimes.
