A man who served prison time for a 2011 murder is now charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, with prosecutors saying he fired a shot as Eagan officers tried to detain him.
Adrian Ricardo Flowers, 37, of St. Paul, pulled a handgun from his waistband during the Saturday incident.
The complaint, charging Flowers with multiple felonies, gives the following information from police and prosecutors.
An officer tried to push the gun out of Flowers’ hand, but the man flexed his wrist and pointed the gun toward the officer’s head.
The officer reported that he could see the barrel of the handgun several times and had to move his head to get out of the way. While the gun was pointed towards the officer’s head, Flowers pulled the trigger and fired one shot, the complaint said. The bullet missed.
When the shot was fired, there were four officers on the ground trying to detain Flowers. One momentarily stopped to ensure officers were not injured. Another reported that when he learned Flowers had a gun, he went from trying to control Flowers legs to looking for the gun to disarm him.
After the first shot, Flowers pulled the gun toward another officer and pushed the muzzle into his torso, the complaint said. Another officer’s body-worn cameras showed Flowers appeared to try to pull the trigger at least once, but no shot was fired.
The officer who had the gun pushed into his torso was eventually able to pin Flowers’ hand to the ground and pry the gun from it.
Officers later saw the round that loaded into the chamber after the first shot was fired had jammed, stopping the gun from being fired again.
The incident began when officers responded about 6:10 a.m. Saturday to a report of a domestic disturbance outside a residence in the 4400 block of Lynx Court, off Wilderness Run Road and near Dodd Road in Eagan.
Police found Flowers and a woman holding a small child outside a residence. Officers tried to talk with Flowers, who “became argumentative, told officers he was going inside, and began walking toward the residence,” the complaint said. He was holding a bottle of alcohol and his speech was slurred.
