A man was critically injured in a shooting in downtown Minneapolis Sunday morning, and a suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward, according to police.

Minneapolis police officers were dispatched to the area of Seventh Street South and Nicollet Mall just before 11:30 a.m. after 911 callers reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Callers also reported seeing a man lying on the ground following the gunfire.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from several suspected gunshot wounds. Officers and emergency medical personnel provided aid before the victim was transported to a hospital.

Police said the man was in critical condition. Additional information about his identity and current condition was not immediately available.

The shooting prompted a law enforcement response in the heart of downtown Minneapolis as investigators worked to determine what happened and locate a suspect.

With assistance from Metro Transit police, Minneapolis police located a person suspected of being involved in the shooting and took him into custody.

The suspect was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on allegations of second-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the shooting or whether the victim and suspect knew one another.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police are expected to review available surveillance footage, witness statements and other evidence as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.

No additional injuries were reported in the initial information released about the incident.

The shooting occurred along Nicollet Mall, a major downtown Minneapolis corridor lined with businesses, restaurants, offices and public transit routes. The late-morning timing meant the incident happened during daylight hours in an area that can see significant pedestrian and transit activity.

Authorities have not announced any additional arrests.

The suspect's booking allegations do not constitute formal criminal charges. Any charging decision will be made by prosecutors after reviewing the evidence gathered by investigators.
