Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo is not mincing words as he describes his disappointment after video emerged of a police officer shooting a colleague in an incident the department described as horseplay.
The incident occurred in September in the police department's parking garage. Video released by police this week shows one officer pulling his weapon and pointing it at another officer seated in a patrol car before re-holstering it.
Investigators say the officer in the patrol car also drew his weapon, which suddenly went off, sending a bullet through the windshield and striking the other officer in the shoulder.
Police Chief Gene Harris identified the officer who shot his colleague as Roy Alatorre and said he has been fired from the department. The officer who was wounded has recovered and remains employed with the Pasadena Police Department.
Harris said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and cited that as the reason the video was just released.
Gordo also expressed relief that the officers' behavior did not result in more serious consequences.
Gordo said that the criminal investigation has been turned over to the district attorney's office for review.
