A northern St. Louis County man has been arrested for allegedly shooting at a firefighting aircraft over the weekend.
Daniel Christian Pettit, 48, was taken into custody at his residence in Portage Township, approximately 11 miles east of Orr, on Sunday evening, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities previously reported that two single-engine Air Tractors were dispatched late Friday afternoon to a wildfire in the township. Upon their return to the Hibbing airport that evening, it was determined that one of the planes had damage consistent with a bullet.
The aircraft landed safely and the pilot was not injured. The shooting is believed to have occurred around 7 p.m. after scooping water from Kjostad Lake.
The Sheriff’s Office said several firearms and ammunition were seized during a search of Pettit’s residence. He was jailed on preliminary charges of second-degree assault, reckless discharge of a firearm and criminal damage to property.
The Federal Aviation Administration, FBI, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, State Patrol, and Duluth and Superior police departments have all assisted in the investigation.
