A mother is facing a misdemeanor charge after her teenage son allegedly took a gun from her purse and then used the gun to hit a student.

Rochelle Lashon Dockery is facing one charge of negligent storage of a firearm after her son reportedly obtained a pistol while she was out of the house and assaulted a juvenile with it, charging documents state.

The incident occurred on Feb. 13, when officers were called to take an assault report at Hopkins West Junior High School, where investigators were shown a video. Hopkins Public Schools said the video captured an incident that occurred at an apartment building involving one of their students, who was the victim of an assault.

The video reportedly showed a 13-year-old boy carrying a black handgun and yelling at another juvenile. The video showed the 13-year-old chase the victim, point a gun at him, and then strike him in the head with the gun.

When the 13-year-old spoke to investigators, court documents said he told the police that earlier in the day, he had been in an altercation with a different juvenile than the one he struck, in which he had been punched.

After this altercation, the teen said he went home to grab the gun because it was the first thing that came up.

When searching the house, investigators said they discovered the handgun used in the assault inside a purse with a fully loaded magazine and a shotgun lying in an unlocked gun case under the bed.

Dockery reportedly admitted to police she had been storing the handgun in her purse, admitting that while she has a gun safe, she hadn’t been using it.
