A 33-year-old Elk River man was hospitalized after a handgun discharged while he was cleaning it at a residence in the 19000 block of Rush Court NW at 6:41 p.m. July 24.

The man told police a round from his 9 mm handgun struck him in the right leg. Officers secured the firearm and applied pressure to the wound until Elk River Ambulance arrived.

Paramedics treated the man before taking him to Mercy Hospital. Police said there was no indication of foul play or intentional self-harm.
