On the night of August 25, tension broke out at a machine shop in Livonia Township when Derek Duane Faulkner, a 31-year-old Zimmerman man, allegedly fired a rifle at a coworker. The incident sent shockwaves through the workplace and sparked a swift police response.

According to reports, deputies arrived shortly after 11 p.m. following calls from two men who had taken cover after the shooting. The victim, who was cleaning a machine, suddenly felt a sharp sting and collapsed. Deputies noticed blood on his shirt and injuries consistent with shrapnel wounds.

Another coworker recounted how he heard the gunshot, saw Faulkner holding a long gun, and fled with the victim to hide nearby. Faulkner was described as intoxicated and upset, a stranger to the victim. Earlier, Faulkner’s mother had warned a coworker about his troubled state and asked him to hold onto Faulkner’s car keys to prevent him from driving.

Police found a bullet casing and a hole in the machine control panel. After a tense 45-minute standoff, Faulkner emerged from his residence with the rifle. Authorities recovered the weapon and other firearms, along with ammunition on Faulkner’s person. He now faces serious charges, including attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, with a hearing set for September 21.
