The former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of killing George Floyd has asked the state of Minnesota to throw out his convictions and release him.
Derek Chauvin was convicted of second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after a jury concluded that his prolonged restraint of Floyd contributed to his murder in 2020.
Chauvin now says his case should’ve gone before a grand jury and that Governor Tim Walz’s decision to put Attorney General Keith Ellison in charge was unlawful.
Even if Chauvin is able to overturn his state convictions, he would still face a separate 21-year federal sentence for civil-rights violations.
Chauvin has been serving his jail time in federal prison since 2021.
