A criminal case against Kevin Robert Larson, the subject of a June 9 SWAT standoff in Coon Rapids, was dismissed after Larson died June 19.

Larson had been charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm and counterfeiting currency.

According to the statement of probable cause, Coon Rapids police were called June 9 after a man reported he had been seriously assaulted at a residence on Edelweiss Street NW. The man told police he had gone to the home to pick up a fraudulent insurance card from someone he knew as Em.

The man later changed his mind and asked for his money back, according to the complaint. He said he realized the $100 bill he was handed was counterfeit and confronted both Em and Larson.

Larson then allegedly grabbed a black Beretta-style handgun and pushed it into the man’s mouth, according to court filings. Two other men in the house began hitting and restraining the man, and Larson used a knife to cut the man’s left forearm.

After fleeing the residence, the man met officers at a safe location. Police reported he had a severe laceration on his forearm, facial injuries and dried blood. He was taken to a hospital.

Other officers went to the Edelweiss Street address, where Larson had barricaded himself in a crawlspace, according to the complaint. A SWAT team was called after Larson ignored commands to come out. The standoff lasted several hours and ended after officers used chemical irritants. Larson was medically cleared before being taken to the Anoka County jail.

Officers later found a counterfeit $100 bill, drug paraphernalia and several prescription bottles for methadone in the crawlspace.

Court records show the state filed a request for disclosure June 10. The defense filed its own demand for disclosure June 12. The case was later dismissed after Larson’s death.
