Prosecutors say that officers responded to a report of a domestic assault around 9:15 a.m. Monday at an apartment building at 484 Temperance St. A woman answered the door and told officers that her boyfriend, Tayshawn Charles Brown-Roberts, had punched her in the head and threatened her with a knife.

The two engaged in a physical altercation before the woman left the apartment and found construction workers to call 911.

According to the charges, Brown-Roberts was issued a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order on March 6, stating he was prohibited from having any contact with his girlfriend. The order was valid and in effect on Aug. 10.

The woman told officers that Brown-Roberts, 21, was known to carry guns and that he had a knife the last time she saw him.

Investigators found surveillance video of Brown-Roberts carrying a bag and walking near the Emergency Room entrance to Regions Hospital. Prosecutors say he then walked to the front of the Birth Center where surveillance video captured a St. Paul Police Officer carrying a rifle nearby.

Brown-Roberts pulled what appeared to be a handgun out of the bag, according to prosecutors, and pointed it at the officer. The officer took cover in some bushes and Brown-Roberts pointed the apparent handgun at his own head.

Then, a St. Paul Police officer shot Brown-Roberts in his hand and back

Brown-Roberts was treated at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is facing charges for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault, violating a no-contact order and threats of violence.

Prosecutors say he told investigators that his girlfriend stayed overnight at his apartment the night before and they had gotten back together. He said he woke up when the woman slapped him and he slapped her in return.

Brown-Roberts allegedly told investigators that he heard his girlfriend on the phone with 911 operators and he was scared, so he ran to the hospital. He said when officers approached him and told him to get on the ground, he did not comply and instead pulled out a fake firearm and aimed it at an officer.

The 21-year-old told investigators that he attempted suicide by pointing his replica gun at an officer, expecting someone to shoot him.
