Google opens $68M Assistant settlement claims

By Twincitieslocalnews staff

Google is processing claims for a $68 million settlement addressing allegations that Google Assistant recorded users without consent due to false activations. The settlement applies to U.S. residents who purchased a Pixel device between May 18, 2016, and March 19, 2026, or were recorded by Assistant in error. Payouts range from $2 to $56, with claims due by August 27, 2026, and legal fees possibly consuming up to one-third of the total fund.

To submit a claim, users need a Unique ID and PIN from a settlement email or can request them online. Acceptable proof for device claims includes order confirmations, account purchase history, or receipts. This settlement follows other privacy-related cases, such as one involving Android data collection, highlighting ongoing legal pressures on Google.

This lawsuit alleges that Google Assistant devices recorded users without being intentionally activated, capturing private conversations through what plaintiffs call false accepts.
